Melissa & Jon were such a fun couple to work with. This is a first of a few posts from their wedding! We went to the Sacramento Temple for a first look/bridal groomal session the night before. Night "owl"

With the coming of a new school year comes a welcome of schedules! I LOVE THIS about the school year. Only given the fact that the kids start school so early, I must go to bed early!!! I am a "Night Owl" LOL! I keep saying this is going to happen and I fail, but it MUST! no more late night editing sessions. Hopefully since my littlest is in preschool 3 days a week I will find some time during the day to work.

Well this last month my dear friend Jyl at Cherub Chic sent me a package of fun!! She makes AMAZING hand made photo props and just plain cute hats and other things. It was like Christmas opening my little box. I was just so happy to see this cute little owl hat, and knew it would be perfect for my newborn Elle, or other wise known by her nickname "OWL" ;) just look at how cute it is. Jyl also made the cute little head band with the flower on it too. I have more of her stuff to post from other sessions. Those to come.

This first one was for my daughters Alice in wonderland themed birthday party.

Hello Everyone!

Yes, I am a big fat slacker!!! Life just gets so busy. I want to say that every day I feel blessed to have the opportunity to do something I love, something that lets me create, meet new people, and be passionate about it!

I also am very blessed to have an amazing family that keeps me very busy, and I am very involved with my church and that keeps me very busy.

I would love to be able to post every single session I do!! Each of my clients is so beautiful..... and their stories are amazing. I know some times my clients feel neglected because their session did not get posted...BUT you are not alone. Lately I have only posted 1 out of every 8 sessions (roughly)or worse. Can you believe it? I seem to do a little better on my Facebook, as it is easier to pop them up on there {www.facebook.com/keriannphotography}

So while I have a resolve to do better I can only promise that I will TRY! LOL!!!

It has been raining and raining here in Northern California! I know everyone can agree the weather has been crazy across the entire country! BUT, the sun came out and weather was amazing for this family session last week!

This is the second time I was able to spend time with this adorable family! Their first session is here. The kids are just so cute and I have so much fun with their family. I LOVE creating relationships/friendships with my clients and be able to see them again and again.

Well, I have still been doing the 52 week project, but have been REALLY BAD about posting them when they are done. We have a group on Flickr that they are posted to as well as some on Face book. I am not sure why I am having such a hard time blogging! I think it is because for this blog lay out I have to post them to photo bucket and then post the html to my post in order for them to look the way that I want.

I remember when I was graduating and I had so many plans. Being able to shoot seniors is fun because I get to hear about their plans and dreams and revisit my own. It's funny to think about how you thought life was going to be and how it has actually turned out. I love it though. No matter what the twists and turns life throws it's all such a great adventure.

Gabe wants to be a doctor, I have no doubt that he will make all the effort it takes to make that come true.

When I first meet the people I photograph I get to know them a little because that is how I can capture who they are. Rachel and Chris were meant for eachother. They will be getting married this time next year on a boat! When I asked them how they met it was over sushi in downtown Sac. From there it was all about vacations and zip lines and the LONGEST DATES EVER! They are such a cute couple and I am so excited for their future.

It just seems like I have all the good intentions to blog every single one of my clients sessions! But I just have not! I am so sorry to all my beautiful clients who have not had a post on this blog yet. I may be choosing my favorite from each session that I have not posted in the last 6 months and do a really long post! LOL! Promises, Promises!!!!

I really can't believe it is already February! It seems that time is actually speeding up! February is my favorite month. It is full of LOVE and my birthday!

Love Loved this session with the Jonutz family! They are just cute to the max. Mom and I talked a ton about the session and had to reschedule a few times before we finally got it done, but in the end it turned out amazing! They were so much fun to work with.

It's the new year!

WEll actually is one hour and twenty eight minutes into the new year! :) I hung out with family and my kids tonight. We played games and danced to The Wii with the new Michael Jackson Dance game. I am pretty good, but I have to admit that my 9 year old son kicked my trash....well everyones trash even my daughters who takes dance. It was a ton of fun!

I have no resolutions for the new year! yep, that is right. I am struggling with this inside of me, even as I write it. This is not something I have ever done. I usually break my life up into sections and set goals or resolutions for each one. But as I feel I want to get centered I am just focusing on what I do daily, putting God first, My family second, and taking everything else in Stride! (thats not a resolution as much as it is a motto!) and it does sound like Mary Kay! HAHA! but it's good.

I actually am so much of a planner and list maker that I have about 4 different calendars and then a master calendar.... ahhh yes! I am a it of a control freak! And I am o.k. with that.

This weekend I am shooting an engagement in San Francisco and getting away for the night their with my hubby! So excited, I ADORE him! And I ADORE engagement sessions!

It's time to slow down a little and hug those you love and enjoy the time you have with them.

I wish everyone a new year filled with adventure! I say that because it seems like life is always throwing me a curve ball and I have to readjust my game. I am sure it is the same with all of you.... but as they say on the cartoon UP.

Well Hello~! I hope that all of you had a Very Merry Christmas and Holiday. The new year is right around the corner and I am excited for all that is has in store!

Since the crazy business is over I finally have the time to blog some of the Fabulous families I had the opportunity to photograph! I also have some weddings to throw into the mix as well!

The Sly Family is one of my very favorite clients! I know that every time I go out to shoot them they will be dressed perfectly and I will get amazing pictures! The kids just have beautiful skin and the cutest dimples you have ever seen!

This week was cup. I love that I am being stretched to think of new cool ideas with every day items. since last week I failed to prepare. This week I had a vision and made it happen. I am actually going to share a few more of mine than just the one for the project since I love them!

When I think of cup I think of my favorite cup...a tea cup. Tea cups make me think of little girls and tea parties. Little girls and tea parties make me think of faries, and wonder, and mossy mushroom enchantment...

Candles! week 3 of the 52 week project

WOW! Does any one else feel like time is just whizzing by? I have been so busy! I can not believe I did not do another post this week before our project Monday came back around. This has been such a wonderful week filled with my sons Birthday, My husband and my 13th Anniversary!!! We also bought gifts for some needy families and saw a wonderful play about the Saviors Birth! This time of year just put so much JOY in my heart!

This week our subject was candles! with a birthday this week I thought it was a great opportunity to take some candle shots,

Rock that OCF!

A few weeks ago I went to Rock that OCF with Ali Hon. It was really fun! ...down memory lane! I have not been to my old photography blog for a long time. It is about 3 years old! It had a different name and a different me! LittleKiwis Photography It was really weird to look at it. I am amazed at how far I have come. As I was looking back I was cringing at my focus, editing, posing lighting, exposure.... well the list goes on and on (LOL!!). But I was having so much FUN!! I still am and I am still loving photography, it has been so good for me. I have met so many great people and developed a skill and talent that is really fulfilling.

I am wrapping up a very busy season and so grateful for all the wonderful clients/friends I get to meet. I wish I could call it work.... but it's totally me time.

This was a session I absolutely LOVED! The kids were ADORABLE! and mom brought some great clothes! I brought my daughter along on this shoot and she was so good at making them smile and laugh. This session was shot in old Folsom in some back alleys.

LOVED the results of my old suitcase and dads tie! matched perfectly and it wasn't even planned!

I have been looking for a beautiful vibrant victorian style couch for my sessions. I love antique furniture anyway. I found this beauty at the Salt Seller just by chance! It was under a ton of stuff in a store that is more thrift shop than antique shop, but there it was.... and now it's MINE!!

This place made me feel like I was at a beach island resort. It was so beautiful, clear, and blue! I fell in love with it the moment I set foot and looked around. I immediately took my family there the next week for a day trip!!!

This is the first time I met The Brown family, but I have been staying in there Vacation Tahoe House we rent from them for a couple of years! What a beautiful family. I promised a sneak peak for mom.....so here they are! I hope to have a full post of this session up soon!

I was totally inspired. . .

When I went to the workshop in March, and then again when I got together with some of my photography friends where, discussed direction in photography and shared some ideas about things we are learning. It never ceases to amaze me how amazing all the artisistic people are that share this photography community. Truly amazing people! I myself have a continued flow of ideas come out of me that I can not even possibly get done with out a babysitter, house keeper, and personal driver! Take this blog for instance. It is totally LAME and unsinpiring. . . . blah. And only because I am in the process of recreating another blog and website that will better display my vision. So it will be AWSOME soon! And I also apologize for the lack of posting. I will do better.

This weekend I am shooting a wedding in Tahoe on the beach and I also have about 5 sessions that still should be blogged!

And I still have NOT posted anything about the NICHOLE VAN WORKSHOP. . . .

so here they are right now.

Nichole was amazing, she was nice friendly and totally real. Every detail of the workshop was planned out from the AMAZING FOOD to the tiny button flowers and magnets she made for the workshop book & name tags!!! {details make me happy!!!}

I also met an amazing group of women.

The day Nichole taught us lighting techniques, we shot with some beautiful models who were troopers!!! we shot till dark and I got so many amazing images.

here are just a few.

This was shot with two alien bees of camera lighting triggered by a pocket wizard attached to my camera. So amazing to get that sunburst and exposure perfect for the back ground and have my subject perfectly lighted. This shot is almost SOOC!!! just a little color boost.

I was so excited about the things I learned and get to implement into my photography. I have even seen a big change in my sessions since I have been home.

I am getting so excited!!! In one week from today I will leaving for a workshop with Nicole Van. My mother in law will be watching the kids and i will be kidless and having fun for 3 whole days!!! I am beyond words excited to learn some new things to share with my clients.

Hello blogger world! and fellow photographers.... I know you share my sentiment when I say I love to take pictures! I love to learn and to meet people and create some art with images. It is my favorite! But you also know if you are a photographer that our clients have so many options when it comes to photographers because everyone has a good camera these days and wants to "be a photographer" which is totally GREAT!!! live your dreams and be AWSOME!

But it is a lot of work, just like any other business. It's hard work!!! I have a dear friend who is an AMAZING photographer, she is so gifted. Spring comes Early in NorCal!

I LOVE that in Feb. the trees start blooming. It might be wet, but it's green and I adore it. What makes it even better is the beautiful background it creates! how lucky I was we had such a beautiful tree that MOM had scouted out for a perfect backdrop to their beautiful family.

I heart the softness as closeness of the tree images. So sweet.

First I just wanted to say that this was such a fun contest and had a great turnout for voting!

#29!!! This was an image from the Baily families session at the beginning of 2009. The funniest thing about it though is that she won this session in my drawing from last year!! Ally you are one lucky lady with an adorable little girl!

But truly it is adorable. I love the light and the fence, everything about it is just so great!!! So Ally, contact me and we can get working on your story board!

Hellooo! I am so fortunate to have so many photography friends and to be able to learn from so many inspiring people. In turn I also get a lot of inquiries through emails, about my photography and for some helpful tips etc. I love to give back to the photography community and love to see others achieving their goals and dreams. So I have decided to post one of my emails to an inquiry and share with all of you.

You may know all of this, you may not..but in any case it will help you know a little bit more about me as a photographer! If you read this please leave me a comment....cause I really love to hear from my fellow bloggers! :)

Dear Keri,
I stumbled upon your blog one time and I fell in love with you great work! You are such an amazing and talented photographer and you pictures make me smile.
I studied photography for about a year now and I am starting my own freelance photography business in my area. I just have some questions about the whole photography business and I hope you could give me some pointers.
My questions are:
1. What are some of the equipments for portrait do I need to invest in to get such beautiful pictures as yours?

2. What kinds of equipments would I need to bring to a wedding should I ever shoot one?

3. What kind of post-editing software and actions do you use?

4. If you have any tips on shooting portraits for family and kids, please feel free to share.

Thank you so much for your sweet comments about my photography!!

alright, so I am going to let you in on a little secret. I do not even consider myself a " super professional"

photographer. I actually really started my business only 2 years ago and 3 years ago I was doing it for FREE just to build a portfolio. I have to admit that it has come a very long way since then. which I am so blessed and grateful for. I would love to answer your questions though, because I have learned so much from other photographers and love to give back to the photography community.

#1 lets talk about portrait photography.

depending on what kind of shoot I am doing I will bring different things. I take extra memory cards, an extra battery, my external flash, a tripod and my lenses. Which are 24-78 2.8 (this is the lens primary lens that I use for most of my work). A wide angle lens. A 50mm 1.8, and a zoom/macro. Just in case I need any of them. I also will bring props such as couches, chairs, baskets, stools, old suitcases, blankets to sit on etc. These things I collected over time. Try to look for free things that you can paint, or are just ugly and cool that would look great in a photo. I also do a lot of my newborn photos in the homes of my clients and so to get the black and white back grounds I make sure and bring a black flannel/or jersey knit sheet. I will tack them up or use big clips on chairs etc. I do not have a ton of professional equipment so I improvise. I do not do any studio lighting in my photos and have not invested in that yet. Everything I do is natural light or a combo with my flash if I need it. But if you can get a handle on your lighting you can do about anything.

#2 Weddings...

wedding are another story all together. you want to make sure that you are UBER prepared for a wedding, cause you know you can't to a "retake" shoot. Have an assistant go with you to carry your bags etc.

I always ask them for a list of the shots that they want for sure. This way I do not miss anything and they get what they want. I take this list with me and have my assistant make sure that I don't miss anything. I take all the same things to my wedding sessions as my portrait sessions. But not all the props. A lot of photographers have a kit that they take with all possible needs and I think that is a good idea I will take snacks and water too. If you have a back up camera it is a good idea to take it just in case. #3 post processing and editing....

Well, here is another surprise. up until one week ago I have not been using anything fancy. I just got an imac and CS4. (both of which I am scared of hahahahaha!) SO I have been using my pc with an external hard drive. And photoshop elements 6.0!!! for the past 3 years!!! yep, can you believe it?

the bottom line is that I have studied and studied photoshop techniques and played around with my own photos until I have achieved the look I want.

Also I do not use actions. O.K. Iied, I do use one action but not always. I use powder room from coffee shop actions, when I need some skin softening, so mostly just on the babies. I do use textures that I have created as well as some from Nichole Van (http://www.nicholevan.com) who I Iove and a few from betharmsheimertextures.blogspot.com. Mostly I have searched and joined sites like ILP (ilovephotography) Clickin moms and flickr. These sites have proved invaluable for me as I have learned mounds of things and been inspired by so many wonderful and talented photographers. I have also been to photoshop and photography classes through my local college, and taken seminars from sandy puc, as well as a bunch of online seminars, and i am going to be doing a workshop with Nicole Van in the spring ( which I am very excited about) Simply put I am an insomniac with a passion for photography and I can not get enough!!! I feel like I have a lot to learn and I need to get my business running a little better. But that is how we get better is, by always learning and wanting to be better!

The reason I decided not to use actions is that I figure if I know how to do it myself, then I can create my own look and stand out and then maybe create some for others some day :)

#4 tips....

I have developed my method for shooting families and kids over time. It is super important to remember that things do not always go as planned. I think the one of the most important things I learned from one of my seminars is to be confident. Even if things are not working out like you thought. Family sessions seem to be stressful for everyone. Just getting everyone ready, picking out outfits, getting there and then having the kids scream or not want pics is STRESSFUL!!!!!! but that is what makes it fun and patience combined with confidence is the key. I like to tell the parents not to have expectations about the kids behavior, and to let me do the directing with them. This way I can talk to them and let them get comfortable with them and then I can get them happy instead of stressed and in trouble.

Also go to some seminars, or purchase on line mentoring, or go to a workshop. I have learned a ton from these.

I also like to ask the client what their vision/style is and then depending on how many are in the session and the location I think of poses and I try to do something original and do diff. angles etc. in each session.

talk to the kids about what they like, Dora, Diego, their favorite toy etc. Sing songs and be silly. Make the family comfortable and remind the parents to look at the camera and let you work with the kids. I find that a lot of times I will have good pics of the kids, but then one of the parents are looking/talking to them and it ruins the pic.

Another thing is getting sharp in focus pics with groups..... are you ready? this is crucial.

your Aperture needs to be correct. So for groups it should mimic the number of people in the group. If you have 5 people it should be at a 5.0 ish. etc. Learn your manual mode and lighting!! super super important for saving yourself hours in photoshop.

above all have fun find your style and your passion and run with it.

I love how tiny and squishy she is. I Love being able to capture such sweet little moments. I did this session and the last one in the clients home. Posing newborns are still a work in progress for me. I need some more to work with. It takes time to pose sooth and then take the photo, but in the end it is shots like these that make it all worth it. You would never know that just before these shots she was crying and just seconds after it she woke up!!!! :)

What a wonderful wedding. This was a blast to do!!! we were so worried because it was pouring! and when I say pouring I mean it!!!! as soon as Sarah and John came out of the temple from their cerimoney it started to just pound us. we took a few shots And trid to make the best of it. And then a miracle happened! It Stopped raining for 2 hours while we did their pics and as we were wrapping up it started to rain again. This shot was taken at the end of the session. They were dancing in the rain in front of the temple. How ROMANTIC is that!!

I have many more of this wedding to come, but I wanted to share this one for now. It's one of my faves! :)

I have been so busy lately, with photos and kids school stuff and holidays. I definatly have not posted as much as I like to. And it does not help that while I am writing this my 2 year old is climbing on me and pounding on the key board demanding to go to DIEGO on Nick Jr. sigh.... just rember to breath and dream a little even when things are crazy. It brings sanity, hope this image helps with that. It did for me and I love the feel of it. I was so happy when it was windy this day. It always helps with the dramatic effects.

OH MY!!! After I was done with this shoot, the owner/magic caramel maker, gave me some of these to take home. And I have NEVER loved caramel like I did this stuff! Not only does it look amazing but it TASTES AMAZING!

It was so much fun to do something different. We set up our shoot at the EVALIMI studios (they rent studio space to photographers and do photo classes).

It was a blast to hang out with Kristina and do some photos for her christmas cataloug and website!

Taylors Senior picutres ~ Northern California senior photography

This handsome football player is my cousin, he is such a STUD!!! Origionally he played here in California, but moved to Utah for his senior year and he is doing AMAZING!! This was a fun shoot because I had not ever shot in Utah county and there were fun spots.

The senior year is so AMAZING! when you are a senior you feel like the world is yours for the taking. I remember feeling so important. I remember feeling like I could do anything, be anything, and had so many options. I had a ton of fun! So Taking pictures of seniors makes me remember all of those feelings and how fun it is. It has been fun for me to capture seniors on the brink of AMAZING things. I love not having to chase them around!!! haha, and I love being creative with them and their individual personalities.

Just for fun... if you want, tell me what you did in highschool, what you wanted to be and what you actually are now... I know I am completly opposite and did nothing I thought I would.

for instance I was a dancer, and on drill team, and other dance teams. I thought I would

go to college to become a child psychologist and minor in dance. Not get married till I was like 25.

what ACTUALLY happened was. One month before college scholarship dance tryouts I tore my right hamstring. started college and got in a car accident with a deisel (dance dream gone). Started my behavioral science degree, started to volunteer with the kids... and figured out it hit to close to home and most of childhood issues were not forgotten....(major NOT psychology)

I got married at 19, worked in health care, took in my little brothers to raise, had 3 kids, and the rest is history. Although now with my beautiful children, my photography, my awesome husband. I would not change a thing. sometime God has plans for us we are not prepared for...and that's o.k.!! :)

These last 2 are a couple of my favorites. The last one because of the mountains, because of the moon at twilight, because of how cool he looks on the hill......

and the BW because I did it in the daylight with a mounted flash and was able to minipulate the settings to make it black behind him and look dark even though it wasn't! so cool!

Alter Ego?

Hi guys!

Did you see the Americas next top model/ or real houswives of Atlanta, where they did the alter ego photoshoots? If you have not, I will tell you what it is. So you think of yourself and who you are... like for instance I would be conservative, christian, crafty, soccer mom, {kinda boring to some... but I do love my life!} anyway so my alter ego per say would be a high class fashionable/sexy/no kid/ powerful executive. And In my alter ego shoot I would dress both parts and do two shoots that are merged in a final image....

Very cool!

One of my clients is working on one of these, I hopefully will be shooting this session in a month or so with her and 4 of her friends.. it should be a blast and test my photography skills. Just so you can get an idea of what I am talking about you can see the images by Derek Blanks who specializes in these, he does an amazing job! I just hope my photoshop skills are up for the challenge.

Part of photography that I LOVE is getting to know families and there different dynamics. It really does not matter if you are adopted, step, half, or years apart. family is special. I was given the opportunity to photograph this father and his two boys, and although they are like 19 years apart, that brotherly bond is there. I loved watching the connection with this family as I spent time with them. Thanks Chris, I had a great time with your family.
We originally were going to old Sacramento to do an Urban session, but we had to change plans due to something going on downtown, we ended up at the capitol which was fine by me. I actually really like it there. It was a beautiful evening and I got some great images. It was also fun to start working again after taking some time during and after our move.

How to make your back ground BLACK in a photograph

I have been asked a lot of questions, And I thought it would be nice to share a little of those questions with EVERYONE and make this a learning experience for all. I HIGHLY believe in giving back. I have learned so much from other photographers and if I can help anyone else it would give me great happiness.

alright well first of all I do not have a studio and all of my photos are done with natural light. even the "in studio" looking photos. I would love studio lighting, but I do not have it, and currently do not have a place to do it. As most photographers who are starting out. Also I wanted to say that so you will have the guts to try this out even if you are in your living room.

So what is the secret? is there one? no not really, most of it is just basic camera mumbo jumbo...so here it goes.

Metering is the tool that gets this done. When you look through your cameras view finder you will see the little lines that go from left to right? that is your in camera light meter. It is a fantastic tool that every photographer NEEDS to use. If you have a hand held meter you may use that as well. There are a lot of metering modes. I usually use spot metering as it gives me the ability to pick what I want to meter.

I do all this in manual. I highly encourage you to shoot in manual. To meter for a black back ground you should get in close and meter off of the baby (or persons) skin. set your shutter speed, ISO, and aperture so that your line is in the middle. {In a Canon} to far left and you are underexposed, to far right and you are overexposed I think Nikon is the exact opposite. Back up focus and shoot. Ignoring what your meter is saying now because it will change and go crazy.

Now what a bout the black ground? I have used many things... mostly black cotton jersey sheets that have been thumb tacked to the wall!! (I know classy right) I did build a wood frame (well actually Dear hubby did) that I wrapped black fleece like fabric I got at walmart and that worked Awesome, as it never had wrinkles and was portable. If you are doing natural light it is best to set up in a room with good non direct sunlight. Closer to that window or door is best for directional light.

Of course photo shop is a huge help in this area as well. sometimes in the black pictures, it's just not ALL black and if you do any kind of cropping or clipping or enlarging of the black areas there may be lighter areas that you may not see on your screen, but will show up in printing. I usually do a layer mask and darken the back ground and then mask and erase the areas I want black.

Alright so grab your kids or anyone who is willing to sit still for a few moments. (even if it is just a baby doll) and try this out! GOOD LUCK and Let me know if this was helpful to anyone as this is my first true attempt at trying to explain things like this at all.

I know CRAZY...right? Even though it is hot enough to not even start thinking about christmas, it is going to be here before you know it!!! Actually I was at the mall and some of the stores have halloween costumes out already... And since my last session available is the last week of November that gives you only 1...2... 2! well 2 1/2 months before that happends. It can't be true you are saying . Well it is. So If you are thinking about getting family pics done this fall for your cards, call quick because I am booking up.

I realize that what I have to offer this year is a bit pricier and a little different than last fall, BUT

$100 print credit can get you a 16x20 portrait of your beautiful family done by an amazing profession print lab! plus a customized Christmas card {instead of the costco generic} if you wish. And the C.D. This package is an amazing deal!

If you are just looking for a quick session of just the kids or just the fam. DO A MINI SESSION!

I am hoping these will book. These are less expensive alternative, but will still be great pics and an amazing experience! If you have any questions about them...let me know.

Senior model shoot~ Northern California Senior Photographer

Hi! It has been a while since I have posted. Not that I have a TON of followers or anything, but just in case you have been checking in with me, sorry it has been so long and I am excited to be back and start the fall "family christmas card season!". I moved from my 3200 sq foot rental house into a 2 bedroom aparment.... yep you heard that right. I downsized!!! A LOT. I sold enough of my furniture and other stuff to furnish an entire house and still have enough for this house and a storage unit! WOW! but my goal in stuffing my 3 kids and one dog into a 2 bedroom apartment is to save enough money this year to pay off 3 credit cards and and save enough for 10%-20% down on a house before the market starts to go back up... so CRaZy? maybe a little... I like to call it, {waking up to reality} and being responsible. So there it is. I have had a crazy month and just got internet and I am ready to start working :) I feel surprisingly happy about all the time I have to work on photography now that I do not have to clean a humungo house.... hahah!

Well now down to business, few photog friends and I decided to get together. We all needed some Senior photos to add to our portfolios as well as just getting together and having some fun! you can see their sites Katie, Sandy, Tina, Aimee The fun part about doing a shoot like this is we can try some new things, and do stuff I would like to work on. Senior posing is one of those. I also got the chance to work on some things like low light and motion photography. We went to downtown Folsom which is definately going to be one of my new favorite locations!

All these kids were so much fun to work with and so photogenic! It was a breeze to work with them! I have LOVED EVERy senior shoot I have done so far.

WEll it is TRUE, she was a beauty Queen! She can seriously pose. SHe is my aunt, and let me tell you...when your 5 ish, there is nothing better than watching your beautiful aunt who you love in a beauty pagent.....or ummm 5! It's like princeses and dresses up, but real!...

I love to capture my family, Kris and her little guy are just so sweet and I love this image of him just loving on her. She is my BFF and we talk like 20 times a day. It's just too bad we live so far away from eachother. When we were kids we fought sosososossoso, I mean I can't even put enough emphasis on how much we fought!!! I never would have thought we would have become as good of friends as we are today.

Kris I heart U! and I am so proud of you for working so hard at L I F E !!! you are such a good example to your son, and I know that special someone will find you guys... good luck with school coming up, You are going to kick some serious booty this year!

I am sure that my husbands Uncle Danny would not appreciate me titling this TIME, but when I look at this image it is what I see, He is a hunter, He is kind, and he has lived..and I think you can see all those things in these 2 images.

These were taken at a funeral a few months back as we said goodbye to a loved one. It made me think about life, and about how precious it is and how each moment is so fleeting...we need to try and Cherish those moments, Cherish our loved ones and Cherish the TIME God has given us here on this earth to learn and to grow and to love.

This is my first senior girl and it was so much fun! I did take senior portraits for my cousin {and I still need to post them}. But I promised a sneak peak so here it is. I am in the middle of trying to get all packed up and moved and I feel like my brain is mush...plus I was really nervous to do this session! I don't know why, but I was! So I totally left my glasses and phone by the side of the road somewhere while shooting and mom had to go and try to find them (sorry Deanna!) I felt like a total nut! It was also very windy, but the session turned out great and she was such a beauty tall and blond and eyes to DIE for!

As a photographer I always rack my brain for poses. I want to do something different so each pose isn't the same, yet each person is different so one pose does not always work for another. Let me know what you think of these, I would love to hear what your favorite poses are or what you try to do for inspiration with posing?

This first one is one of my favorites! The wind just worked perfectly with her hair and I love the motion it created!

Sundance ski resort in Utah

This fourth of July we went on a trip to Utah. We always love to visit the mountains while we are there. The mountains in Cali. Just are not the same. Sundance is one of our favorite places. They have the best 5 star restaurant called the Tree Room. My Husbands brother was a chef there and we have had the pleasure of dining there more than once! It is also a ski resort in the winter and in the summer hiking and mountain biking and outside theatre. It was created by Robert Redford and origin home of the Sundace film festival... We took the kids for a little visit. Enjoy some of the pics!

Personality flaws

This beauty is my oldest daughter, I came across this today as I was giong through my vacation photos so I was thinking today about myself, and my personality flaws.

It occured to me that my children help me see the things I want to change.

It's funny when you hear your kids talk to each other and they are not talking nice, and it occurs to you "oh my goodness, that sounds just like ME!" This daughter of mine is an angel, she has been a ray of light since the day she was born, she is a beauty inside and out. She helps me be a better person, a better mom, a better woman. All my kids do, but as my only daughter I want to set a better example than what I had. I want her to be strong, I want her to be kind, I want her to make choices that will bless her life. I know those are things we all want. But sometimes I wonder what things she will hate about me, what things will I mess up on When I yell, and I am not patient and I criticize...I catch myself and think, "dang! I should be better" but it is hard and I find that one of my personality flaws is that I tend to talk harshly
even when I do not mean to. I guess I have been been putting myself under a microscope lately, Who is this person...I have changed so much in the last 10 years, sometimes I am not even sure

This beautiful family is MINE! my cute little cousins who I used to babysit, not so little anymore. They are so handsome... My Aunt Uncle and their boys just moved to Utah, they were living here by me in Northern California, so I am sad to see them go.

This is one of my favorites from their family session, The middle one Taylor had me do his senior pics while I was there and I am excited to post those as well. (when I get some time to edit!)

I have to say that as I Meet new people and I am let into their lives for a sliver of time, I feel blessed. To get to hear their story a little and to see the interaction/the love they share for eachother. It makes me happy. I am such an emotional person, Let me introduce you to this beautiful family. The Dad works with my husband, when he contacted me to do their pics I was excited! It has taken him years and years to get his family here in the U.S. He has been working here without them and his family just moved here after their daughter was born. I could just see in the images , how happy they are and I could just imagine how hard it must have been to be away from eachother. I actually cried a little as I was editing these because I can just feel the emotion from some of the images.

I am truly grateful that I have been given this opportunity, Thank you.

Oh, my baby or rather my toddler... woke up from his nap and was just crying and crying for no reason. But I could not help but get out my camera cause it was just so darn cute. He eventually found a tractor that made him quite happy. I just love how his chubby little hands have those dimples and how the light glows off of his crazy hair.

I am just loving this stage of his life so much! He is still a baby, but he is finding his personality. He copies everything his big brother and sister say, and jumps off of or balances on anything he can find. We joke that he will probably be our x games kid!

So here is the rest of this session as promised. I have had so much fun with the last couple of sessions I have done. The little kids (under 5) are the hardest and cutest to photograph! But I have loved the interaction and the challenge of capturing them at just the right moment when they are looking at me making a crazy noise, or that split second non-goofy smile!!! :)

I have been thinking lately that raising young kids just wears you out!! HAHA, but it is such a JOY. I have just been loving my own kids as well as the interaction I see with the families I have been able to capture.

I just LOVED playing dress up with you guys! Thanks Lisa for another great session.

Product spotlight

I really wanted to post a Product highlight. I had a client order some beautiful images from her session! I thought I would post them on the blog so some of my clients can see the quality product they can get from their images.

The middle image is a 16x24

the two smaller images are 11x14

all are mounted on 2mm styrene and coated for protection

The quality is amazing, they are clear as can be. All images 11x14 and larger will be mounted like these. All other images have the option as well. This is your LIFE as art. On your walls passed down through generations.

I am GUILTY. . . I need to print more images and hang them in my home. This is a goal for me.

not to let my images sit on the computer or a disk. Get them printed. There is nothing like a printed image... It is so yummy.

SO on a personal note.... {not that you really want to hear all my babbling} BUT. . .I just wanted to say thanks for all of the emails and comments I have had on my latest sessions. So much joy and sense of accomplishment comes for me when my clients Love their pictures. :)

I wanted to answer a few ?'s and maybe give some words of encouragement...

what have I been doing different you ask? Why are my pics better? Do I have Cs3 or 4?

to answer those I have to say this...

When I fist started to do Photography I was learning about composition and doing a lot of stuff with my point and shoot. When I got my DSLR I seriously was overwhelmed! I poured into learning this thing for over a year with classes and books and practice. Then I got a new lens which added another learning curve, and then there is PHOTO SHOP (ugh!) who knew it was going to be so hard, Well I am up for a challenge and ALWAYS pushing myself to do better, learn better

Like how do I get my images crisp like that photographer

or how do they do that process on photo shop?

So to say the least I have worked my tushy off. I still am using photo shop elements 6.0

{an ancient baby version of what I really need.}

I am so flattered that you all have been so nice, that I have so many people emailing me and asking me questions and booking sessions, It feels like all the hard work is paying off. . .

So in short I have not done much different

things are just starting to click better! I am more comfortable with my camera, I have lighting down to a science (pretty much) and to be honest these images in the posts lately are a lot of SOOC (straight out of camera) with photo shop of course, but not as much as I have done before.

So better SOOC images equal less work in photo shop and better end results...

If you are just starting out, or are wanting to get into the business or just love photography, my advice to you is to work hard and study and learn all you can....then PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE...

again, thanks for all the emails and questions. I really do not mind answering questions about technical stuff and I have loved making new friends . . .

Another family session

This time with some of MY family! While I was at the funeral of my husband grandma, I was able to do a few sessions with my family. and let me tell you it was so much fun! I am always so jealous of the photogs in Utah that have those amazing mountains to capture in the background.

My Brother in law just happens to live in the perfect spot and we only had to walk down the street to get these beautiful shots. My niece and nephew are so cute. My niece is only 14 and already drop dead gorgeous!

I told you I was going to be posting a lot in the next little while.

In this first shot I wanted to make it look really cool because it is a picture that speaks to me. Just so different. . . when I was at the funeral it made me think a lot about images. Her viewing and funeral were filled with images from her life. I feel that images capture time, and live forever... what am I saying with my images? what can I capture for others that will speak to their posterity? It is something I want to incorporate more into the sessions I do. Create something that will speak to the soul, in life, in death... for always.

This session was before Easter, but I am just now getting around to posting it.
These kids were a dream. It was perfect weather too! These kids had to be some of the sweetest I have ever met. I hope my kids are as well behaved and nice as they were. It's probably because their mom is so nice. Aren't they just adorable.

It was fun to work with older kids, I did not have to chase them around for an hour! {LOL}

Hey! I hope you all are loving spring and this warm weather as much as I am. (well unless you are in Asrtalia or around that area, than I hope you are loving fall!)
I have been so busy latley! I am totally behind on my posts & My blog is a MESS!!
I sat down last night to edit and do some work on the blog and at 11:30 I was falling asleep! (totally unheard of for me) so I packed it up and went to bed.

Experiments with water. . .

through Flickr I h ave seen some amazing pictures using water, water drops, catching water falling etc... I LOVE it. water is amazing and so powerful. I have not done a lot of action photography where you capture moving objects, so to say the least I have been trying to "catch" water for a few months now. I tried to put my shutter speed at the fastest possible. That did not work. not to mention my focus was off. Since I am mostly a natural light photographer I do not work with flash a lot. although I am learning more about it.

I was so frustrated trying to capture these drops from my kitchen sink, then I remembered something one of my teachers taught us. "flash stops motion" {duh!} flash and slow shutter speeds can do some pretty cool stuff. SO I thought, "hmmm...lets try this flash thing" and what do you know. here are my water droplets! Perfect and beautiful. I am so happy with them. After many many failed attempt. Now that I know more about this I can experiment.. look for some more cool experiments with water in the future.
